Pure coloured pencil.
This portrait of my son in front of a sweet shop in Florence was made from a favourite family snapshot.
Primarily this was a challenge in capturing all the different layers in the subject - from the child; the reflections of the shop signs opposite and the passers by (including the photographer) to the confectionary, the shopkeeper serving inside and the shelves of items right at the back of the unit.
However, I also wanted to capture the expression on our son's face as he realised that we were only window shopping and we were not actually going to buy any of the amazing sugar confections that are so beautifully displayed on the other side of the pane. He was very happy to be rewarded with a gelato sugar-rush within due passi 'two steps' :- )
Selected for the UKCPS Open Art and exhibited in the RBSA gallery, Birmingham.
